Here we learn the story behind the amazing handmade shoe label and where the inspiration for their shoes come from. I stumbled across one of their shoe designs a few weeks ago on Instagram and instantly fell in love with their brand!
Tell us a little about the label Muna Istanbul:
Muna Istanbul: We started this business as two sisters. Our first collection was spring-summer 2013. You can ask us where did this shoe designing idea come from? Since our family business is leather manufacturing we sometimes visit shoes and bags atelier with our father. We even have a chance to choose and design our own shoes for special days like family weddings and proms. My elder sister Safak studied business at college and I (Nazlıhan) studied history. We even designed our own flats and boots when we were in college and when we wore them people asked us where they can find those shoes. That was a motivation for us and we started to think about creating our own brand. My elder sister is very talented about drawing and she started to draw some shoe models. After we graduated, we worked at different business but we are always thinking about how and where to start and after very long research period we finally presented our models for ss13 season.
I love how unique your shoe designs are, tell us about your design process:
Muna Istanbul: Our shoes are all handmade, we use real leather even our manufactured leather,we create and design our models. As we started this business our primary aim is to promote shoe ateliers which produce handmade shoes instead of massive production with machines.
I just adored the love heart Chamonix shoe photo!
Muna Istanbul: Yes these heart shaped flats are very much liked. It was shot at France-Chamonix that’s why we saved it as Chamonix.
There is always great risk with starting a new business particularly in the fashion industry, would you agree?
Muna Istanbul: As a new starter, chance was with us. We were on Elle Turkey in September issue and British Vogue in October issue. We also gave a present to lovely Miranda Kerr when she came to Turkey and she just love our special design, handmade sandals.
Thank you to the lovely sisters and team at Muna Istanbul for collaborating with us we wish you well for the future ahead we know you are only going to get more successful as time goes on!
